Different breathing and meditation exercises in yoga improve your concentration and self-control—improved concentration and self-control help in combating stress. There are several yoga positions for weight loss, that help in losing and managing weight.

Yoga Postures for Weight Loss

There are various positions and exercises in yoga that help in managing your weight. Besides this, there are several other health benefits that yoga offers to you.

  • Seated Positions:

     A warm-up session of 5-10 minutes is a must in yoga exercise. Some of the best-seated postures or exercises like the Bharadvajasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana help in improving the digestive system as well as cleansing the internal organs like the kidneys and liver. The body’s overall health depends highly on the proper functioning of the digestive system. Also, it helps with weight management.

  • Standing Positions: 

    While performing any of the standing postures in yoga, immense strength and balance of the body is required. The chair position is right for strengthening your thigh, calves and spine. The warrior position is an excellent way to stretch your shoulders, abdomen and upper back. Stretching of legs, spine and hips as well as an improvement in the digestive system can be gained through the half-moon and triangle postures.

  • Forward Bends: 

    These bending can be done in both standing as well as seated positions. Some of the useful forward bends are mudho mukha svanasana, uttanasana, upavistha konasana, and prasarita padottanasana. They help in improving the digestive system, strengthening the knees and thighs, stretching the calves, hips and hamstrings, and most importantly, they help in relieving the stress and tension.

  • Inversion Postures:

    These postures are an excellent stimulation to the abdominal organs and thyroid glands. They are also an excellent solution to backaches and tensions.

  • Relaxation:

    Similar to a warm-up session, relaxation of five to ten minutes is a must before ending each yoga session. It is an excellent way to relieve stress and tension. Savasana and balasana are the best relaxation poses. Meditation helps in calming the mind and relaxing the whole body.

Weight Loss Yoga Positions

We will now have a look at some of the yoga positions for weight loss.

  • Sun Salutation: 

    Sun salutation is also known as the Surya Namaskaar. It is one of the toughest yoga positions, but at the same time, it is the one that gives maximum benefits. Apart from just burning calories, it benefits the various muscle groups and improves flexibility. It is one of its kind of exercise that involves every part of your body. To begin with, you need to stand straight with arms on your sides and the bodyweight evenly distributed. Then while taking a deep breath, you need to raise your hands right over your head, as you do while you greet or do a “Namaste”. Then as you exhale, bring your hands to your sides and then get forward as you bend from you hips touching the ground. Then inhale again lifting your torso, ensuring that your back is straight and feel the stretch in your spine. And the last part is to bend your knees and your feet back while keeping your arms in the same position. Then try to reach to your tail-bone with your hands and your heels closer to the floor. Finally, straighten your legs by getting them back to your hands. Return to the start position by dropping your head. You need to repeat all of these steps at least three to four times.

  • Chair Position: 

    It is the right way of firming and slimming your butt and thighs. Though not complicated but it does require a lot of strength and energy. To begin with, you need to stand straight with your arms on the sides. As you inhale, raise your arms and place them in the palm to palm position. Then as you exhale, gain a seating position at 45 degrees. You need to stay in each area for about 15 to 20 seconds and then do a repetition.

  • Power Yoga: 

    An increased heart rate that helps in burning calories at a faster pace may not be achieved through the regular yoga sessions. This can be done with the help of Power Yoga. Power Yoga is a new technique of combining traditional yoga and breathing exercises with aerobics. This increases the heart rate and thus, helps in burning calories at a faster pace. Many of the activities in Power Yoga are an outcome of the sun salutations.

These are some of the active yoga positions for weight loss. It might look complicated at the beginning. However, with continued practice, the flexibility of the body improves and exercises become quite easy.
